When you think of mixed competitive wrestling, the first thing that may come to mind is Andy Kaufman and his comedic antics. However, this sport does date back to the 1950’s. To most, it may seem hard to imagine women in the ring in this era of manly men and June Cleaver wives. The women who jumped in the ring in the fifties helped to clear the way for the men and women who compete in this sport today.
Promoters, however, have done their homework and now cater to the more feminine side of their audience. The ladies of today not only shoot for the belts and championships developed specifically with them in mind, but some even leap in and compete for the men’s titles as well. Needless to say, the ladies of this sport have more than proven that girls are more than just sugar and spice — indeed, that concept was abandoned long ago.
The rules for these events have changed a little over the years. No longer can a man and a woman wrestle one another in a tag team match. In the event that a person of the opposite sex gets tagged, the other team must tag in the person of the same sex. No choices, and if it is not done in a timely manner, there will be repercussions. One can assume that the reasoning for these new rules is because of the contradictory belief that the matches themselves are unfair towards women. In reality, one has only to take a good look and realize these women can more than take care of themselves.
Women have also made sure not to allow the sport to overcome their femininity or beauty. The WWE has even gone so far as to dub their wrestling beauties as Divas. The Divas can not only kick but in the ring, but many of them can even manage other wrestlers and even run companies relating to the world of wrestling.
Rest assured the wonderful sport of mixed competitive wrestling will continue to, as always, be interesting and fair to all who are involved. Although changes will continue to come, the men and women will still do what they are great at while continuing to add more excitement and thrills to this sport as time goes by. So whether it is a more well known promoter or some the lesser known independent promoters, this sport is a must see for anyone interested in the wrestling world.
