Time and time again, major upsets in college sports have led to fans rushing the court or field to celebrate with their team just as the game clock expires.
Court-storming has occurred frequently during the 2023-24 men’s college basketball season, as top-10 teams have faltered on the road to underdogs at an unusual rate. The latest instance of students rushing the floor has some in the sport considering if something should be done to regulate or ban court-storming all together.
Last week, after the buzzer sounded and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons upset the Duke Blue Devils, Duke center Kyle Filipowski collided with a fan who was rushing toward midcourt, leaving the 7-footer hobbled. Filipowski wore a bag of ice on his knee after the collision and was sore prior to Wednesday’s game against Louisville.
Many prognosticators have offered their suggestions and solutions to court-storming. Former Gonzaga Bulldogs standout Robert Sacre didn’t seem to have much of an issue with fans celebrating on the court, though he did recognize the dangers that come with it.
“It’s a part of college sports,” Sacre said on Talking Zags. “People will say outrageous stuff just to get under athletes’ skin; you don’t want those problems. At the same time it brings that whole college atmosphere into it, you can’t do it anywhere else.”
